Is cod liver oil right for you

Getting omega-3 is incredibly important, and getting omega-3 from cod liver oil is definitely an option to consider. Before making a choice it is best to understand the benefits and drawbacks of taking cod liver oil instead of regular fish oil supplements. Although cod is a cold water fish similar to the types of fish used for other fish oil supplements, cod oil is processed from the cod’s liver as opposed to flesh of the fish. Because of that, cod liver oil contains vitamins A and D, along with the DHA and EPA fatty acids common to other fish oils.

DHA and EPA are essential fatty acids and their benefits include cardiovascular health, decreasing inflammation, mental health, nervous system and eye health. These fatty acids are the primary reason most people want fish oils in their diet. Their benefits are numerous and well published. It is my opinion that no diet should be without omega-3 from the source that best makes sense for an individuals specific diet and needs, be it from regular fish oils or cod liver oil.

Vitamin A is an essential vitamin stored in the body’s fat. It benefits us by providing eye and vision health, hair and skin, as well as digestive and reproduction health. Vitamin D is best known for its role in strong bones and teeth. There are studies indicating that the vitamin produces positive benefits for muscle development and nerve health. Both vitamins are essential for good health, and deficiencies in either can cause many health conditions and general wellness problems. No diet should without proper amounts of these vitamins as directed by the RDA (recommended daily allowance), as published by the FDA.

Cod liver oil is a great way of getting DHA and EPA, along with the vitamins A and D. A possible drawback is that a diet that already has sufficient amounts of A and D will get additional quantities that may increase levels to the point where they are more harmful than good. Both vitamins can cause ill health effects if excessive amounts are taken, and doing so should be avoided. Before taking cod liver oil, consider if you need more of those vitamins or not. If your diet is typically low in vitamins A and D, then you may find cod liver oil a great way of getting your omega-3. If your diet is already rich with the vitamins, a better alternative is regular fish oil supplements.

The important thing is to ensure you are getting good overall nutrition, including recommended amounts of vitamins and minerals, along with regular omega-3 consumption. Doing so will go a long way in providing a healthy foundation for a long life.
