Fish oil and cholesterol

How does fish oil impact cholesterol levels? The relationship that fish oil consumption has with cholesterol is thought to be influenced by a couple of primary factors. First, triglyceride levels within the blood are lowered. Second, HDL cholesterol levels may be raised. HDL’s are said to be “good” cholesterol as they carry cholesterol’s out of the blood steam. Its also possible that LDL or “bad” cholesterol levels may also be raised slightly in some people when taking fish oil, if triglyceride profiles are already high.

So why do a great number of health professionals recommend fish oil consumption? One must look at the entire impact that fish oil has on both cholesterol readings and cardiovascular health. Many studies have shown that fish oil can reduce the occurrence of sudden cardiac death, strokes, and heart attacks. The overall benefit to heart health is great. As for cholesterol levels, the lowering of triglycerides and increase in HDL’s, along with the anti-inflammatory characteristics of fish oil, cause a positive overall cholesterol impact in many people.

LDL’s facilitate the movement of other cholesterol’s through the blood supply. When LDL’s become oxidized by free radicals caused by inflammation, they can increase blood plaque in the artery walls increasing the risk of certain types of cardiovascular disease. Levels of LDL don’t necessarily determine risk alone, its plaque buildup that causes many problems. If other cholesterol profiles are normal, a slight increase in LDL from fish oil consumption may not a problem. However high LDL levels outside of normal ranges are cause for concern, and should always be analyzed and treated by your doctor.

Should you take fish oil to keep cholesterol levels in check? If you have no health conditions and are in good health, taking a moderate amount of fish oil daily is definitely something to consider. Amounts of approximately 1000mg are about average of supplements available at grocery or pharmacies, and are typical amounts consumed by many people. They can be a good addition to an overall healthy wellness plan.

If you have cholesterol concerns, the first thing to do is talk with your doctor and get a cholesterol profile done. Depending on the findings, she may or may not recommend fish oil supplements. If levels are found to be abnormal, only your doctor can determine the correct way to get them back to where they need to be. Discuss fish oil with her and see if its right your specific needs.
